Basic aspects for the agronomic management of certified bean seed production
Abstract
The production of certified bean seed does not reach sufficient quantities to cover national requirements, on the contrary, each year it decreases significantly, due to the little encouragement for planting good quality seeds, little supply of improved cultivars and their basic seed. Diversion of the seed harvest towards the commercial grain market, mainly due to the low seed price at the farmer level, generated by the absence of differential state policies between the price of certified seed and commercial grain. The net yield of certified seed using improved varieties, opportune sowing time and adequate agronomic management ranges between 800 and 2,300 kg/ha. It is estimated that the demand for beans is around 75 million kilograms and it is considered that per capita consumption decreased from 7 to 3 kg/person.
